AT&T GIVES QUICK MESSAGING PHONES AN APPS BOOST

AT&T

Smart apps for streamlined devices

For millions of AT&T customers, Brew MP is about to make their full-featured messaging phones smarter than ever. And for developers, it’s going to make delivering apps to a growing market even easier. AT&T has announced plans to have Brew MP power the complete line of their popular quick messaging phones (QMPs) by the end of 2011, which will give one of the carrier’s most high-volume segment of customers access to more mobile content than ever before.

Key Points

  • Brew MP: Platform for AT&T’s quick messaging phones
  • Quick messaging phones represent roughly 30% of AT&T subscribers

More apps mean more possibilities.

QMPs are equipped with physical or touchscreen QWERTY keyboards and full Web browsing, but have almost completely missed out on the apps market until now. Using new QMP handsets powered by Brew MP, customers who are hungry for mobile content will have access to apps. No more being just text-centric. Starting with the HTC Freestyle that hit stores in February 2011, these devices will let users go from simple messaging to gaming, social networking and other activities without breaking the bank.

“Moving to Brew MP will tear down the barriers and make it easier for developers to reach our customers—and our customers to access the hottest apps.”

David Christopher, AT&T Chief Marketing Officer

Write once. Publish often.

Brew MP’s powerful native C language programming and support for Java, Flash and Lua make it possible to deliver a full catalog of new and popular offerings to customers hungry for what’s hot. And by installing Brew MP across quick messaging phones, which traditionally have had operating systems specific to each device maker, AT&T is making it easier for developers to reach millions of consumers.

QMPs, meet Brew MP.

The market is growing fast. Since AT&T pioneered the category in 2008, QMPs have come to represent nearly 30 percent of the carrier’s customers. Device manufacturers for AT&T are lining up to launch Brew MP handsets, with the HTC Freestyle leading the way.  AT&T has announced plans for a number of additional Brew MP devices in 2011.
